Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to pay GST as an Uber driver in Australia?
Yes. Ride-sourcing counts as "taxi travel" under GST law, so the usual $75,000 turnover threshold does not apply. You must register for GST from your first fare and charge GST on all your rideshare income, no matter how little you earn. ALITAX makes sure this is set up and reported correctly.
How much does it cost to lodge my BAS with ALITAX?
Your first 2 BAS quarters are completely free. After that, BAS lodgement is a low flat fee per quarter. See our full transparent pricing — no surprises.
Do I need an ABN to drive for Uber or DiDi?
Yes. You're running a business as a sole trader, so you need an ABN and must be registered for GST. If you don't have them yet, ALITAX can set up your ABN and GST registration quickly — usually within 24 hours.
Can I lodge BAS for both Uber and DiDi in one return?
Absolutely. All your rideshare income across Uber, DiDi and any other platform is reported together on the one BAS under your ABN. Just send us each platform statement and we combine them into a single, accurate lodgement.
What expenses can I claim on my BAS?
The work-related portion of fuel, car running costs, depreciation, mobile and data, platform service fees, car cleaning, water for passengers, parking, tolls, registration, car rental and insurance. A valid logbook and records are required — your full GST calculator and smart logbook live in your free account at bas.alitax.com.au.
When is my BAS due?
Most rideshare drivers lodge quarterly. Standard quarterly due dates are around 28 October, 28 February, 28 April and 28 July. Lodging through a registered agent like ALITAX can give you extra time beyond the standard date.
How much does a tax return cost for an Uber or DiDi driver?
Rideshare tax returns start from a low flat fee and include every deduction we can substantiate. See our pricing page for current rates, tailored to your situation and number of platforms.
What's the best car rental for Uber and DiDi drivers?
Top rideshare-ready providers include Splend (from ~$279/week), Karmo, RideLender, Hertz via Uber Rent, and local hybrid fleets from ~$240/week. Most bundle insurance, servicing and rego into one weekly fee. See our full rental comparison. Best of all, your rental is a business expense — we'll claim the GST and cost on your BAS.
Do I need special insurance for rideshare?
Yes. Your everyday policy usually won't cover you while carrying paying passengers, and a claim can be refused if you didn't declare rideshare use. Insurers like Youi, NRMA, AAMI, Suncorp and Bingle offer rideshare cover (typically ~$1,600–$3,500/yr). See our full insurer comparison — and remember the premium is deductible with claimable GST.
